choices, choices.

and so begins my second 'friend friday' thanks to katy over at modlychic.  this week katy has a few questions about how we choose our outfits each day.  read my answers below and check out katy's blog to see how other bloggers answered.

1. How do you determine what you will wear that day?
Every week is different for me, but I typically start my week with a plan.  I find it cathartic to end my Sunday with a trip inside my closet and a plan for the week ahead.
2. Do you plan outfits out in advance for a whole week, month, weekend?
I try to plan my outfits for just a week in advance and typically leave my weekend ensembles to chance (since sometimes that ends up being yoga pants or pjs).  Luckily, I was given a Stylit for Christmas, and I have to say that it is absolutely the best way to plan for the coming week.  It has little models that you can draw on for each day.  I like to sit on the train and figure out what makes sense once I take a look at the weather and what I will be doing each day after the office.
3. Do you have any specific way of tracking outfits and items already worn so you don't repeat?
Like I said above, the Stylit is my most simple way of tracking outfits.  My blog is also a great way, since I sometimes have to look back a few days or weeks to remember how I wore something or when I last wore an item.  Wily Wiley is my own personal style catalog.
4. How do you discover new combinations of items in your closet? (Trial try-ons? Hanging items together?)
On my Sunday night sessions I like to take a pile of clothing from my closet into my bedroom and try on a bunch of different combinations.  I write them down and keep track of how I liked things paired and which outfits work.  My closet is a total disaster, since it's super huge, but deep with a tiny little door (oh, yeah, and I share it with Jeb.)  So hanging items together wouldn't really work so well in my world.  Sometimes I will keep things on a small pile in my bedroom for the week to come.
5. To streamline the process for 2011 what is one new thing you can do to cut down your dressing time?
I have a big plan to do a huge closet clean-out.  I love going back through everything I have and getting rid of the things I haven't worn while finding pieces I forgot I had.  I'm really looking forward to finding lots of lost treasures and styling them up anew!

do you plan your outfits?
or leave it to chance?
i would love to hear!

  2. I might need to look into the Stylit. I'm not the best artist in the world, but I could see that becoming a little addictive. - Katy

  3. I'm always amazed by people who can share closets. Mine doesn't have many clothes, but it is always a mess!
I've heard nice things about the Stylit. It sounds like a nice way to think about what you are going to wear.
